Ping monitoring works when the monitored device is reachable from the network path used for the check. In practice, teams use it for publicly reachable infrastructure and for environments where they already provide network access to the monitored target.

What's the difference between ping monitoring and port monitoring?+

Ping monitoring checks whether a device is reachable over the network using ICMP — it tells you if the host is online. Port monitoring goes a step further, checking whether a specific service, such as SSH (22), RDP (3389), MySQL (3306), or SMTP (25), is accepting connections. A server can respond to ping while a critical service on that server is unavailable, so many teams use both together.

Why would ping succeed but my service still be down?+

A successful ping only confirms your device is reachable — it says nothing about whether your web server, database, email server, or application is actually working.
